For Educators:

In middle and high school classrooms and Roundabout's three theatres, students and teachers are engaging with theatre artists in the exploration and active investigation of how artistic choices convey meaning. We invite you and your students to engage in this investigation with us through trips to the theatre, classroom residencies and professional development opportunities.

theatre Access:
Attending productions and pre-show workshops at Roundabout

Theatre Access


Theatre Access provides discount matinee tickets to Roundabout productions for student groups throughout the tri-state area. Teachers are invited to participate in professional development workshops and receive lesson plans to prepare students for a trip to Roundabout. Pre-show workshops are also available for students.








Classroom Partnerships:
School-based residencies which include Roundabout productions

Classroom Partnerships are residencies that use theatre to teach to or address a central literary, historical or sociological theme. The content of residencies is tailored to the existing curriculum in the class based on collaborative planning sessions between the teacher and a Roundabout teaching artist.

  • Page to Stage is a residency program that uses theatre to teacher literacy and includes ten classroom visits by teaching artist, student attendance at two Roundabout productions often followed by discussions with the cast and study guides or other resource materials sharing the perspectives of directors and designers-all of who leads to the development of students' own dramatic works.   • Perspectives residencies explore a central literary, historical or sociological theme through the study of theatre. Students study playwriting, acting and theatrical design to ultimately develop their own dramatic works around this theme. More about Perspectives





School-wide Partnerships
Reforming school culture through theatre across the curriculum
and student driven theatre companies

School-wide Partnerships provide schools with in-depth programs that connect the process of theatre production to project-based learning objectives and curriculum standards. These year-long partnerships are tailored to meet the needs of individual schools and take place in several classes or grade levels within each school.

About New Century High Schools
In partnership with the New York City Department of Education and New Visions for Public Schools, Roundabout was instrumental in developing new small high schools in New York City including current school-wide partners Bronx Theatre High School and Brooklyn School for Music and Theatre. These schools were founded on the principal that theatre would be incorporated into pedagogy on a school-wide basis by finding curriculum connections to theatre in every subject area, including science and math. Roundabout's artistic mentors and coaches work directly with teachers and students in their development and staging of theatrical works at their school, from classic theatre to original, student-written pieces.

    SCHOOL WIDE PARTNERSHIP CURRICULUM MODELS

  • Curriculum Connections is constructed around the content, skills and learning that students need in core subject areas. theatre is used as the mechanism to develop those skills and to provide a means for learning.

  • Beyond Boundaries is a residency designed to help students articulate their own value and worth as they are encouraged to move beyond self and societally imposed boundaries that keep them from achieving their goals within their school community and beyond.

  • Theatrical Mentoring or Producing Partners provides school-wide partners with the resources of a professional theatre company to promote reform in and through theatre across the curriculum. Students and teachers learn to replicate the functions of a professional theatre through the staging of their own theatrical productions.

  • Special Projects are residencies developed in collaboration with Roundabout to address the specific needs of the school partner.





Professional Development
Opportunities for educators to enhance their teaching practice

Professional Development provides opportunities to enhance an educator's ability to use theatre as an effective teaching tool. Workshops provide opportunities for teachers to stimulate their creative impulses and ideas while practicing theatre activities in the context of learning standards. The workshops, customized to meet different learning objectives, are offered throughout the year to teachers, schools, and districts.

    PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT MODELS

    Theatrical Teaching Institute

  • Theatrical Teaching Institute is an intensive introduction to the Theatrical Teaching Framework. The framework utilizes basic theatrical elements such as theme, plot, spectacle and character and establishes parallels to educational components such as academic contents, lesson plan, structure, classroom setting and teaching demeanor. Using this framework, Roundabout provides opportunities for educators to stimulate their own intellect and creativity while practicing theatre activities in the context of academic learning standards.

  • Postcard Production participants experience the process of creating a theatrical production as they explore how acting, directing, sets, lights and costumes convey meaning in theatre. During the workshop, participants fulfill the roles of set, costume light and sound designers, stage managers, director, actors and marketing staff. They begin with a traditional "Meet and Greet" and then engage in making creative choices as they move through text analysis, design concept meetings and theatrical rehearsals. The workshop culminates with teams presenting their own interpretation of an excerpt from a well-known play.

  • Preview Workshops are designed for classroom teachers who will be bringing students to Roundabout productions. Led by Roundabout teaching artists, participants explore activities that connect the production to their curriculum.

  • Teachers Series provides discounted subscriptions to Roundabout productions along with pre- and post-show workshops.

  • Custom Workshops are developed to fit the individual objectives of participating educational organizations.

Education @ Roundabout supports New York City Department of Education's ArtsCount and teaches many of the theatre skills specifically outlined in the Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Arts.
